This edition is representative of the works Carrie Yamaoka has developed over many years in order to give form—through both visual and tactile poetry—to chemical operations and physical processes that often go unnoticed. By applying resin to a black vinyl film, she allows a play of liquid affinity and repulsion to emerge: the material spreads and withdraws, tracing out a surface in precarious balance, held in a state of continuous transformation. This way of fixing movement—not to tame it, but rather to preserve its potential— recalls the logic of the photographic snapshot: a freeze-frame that suspends time without canceling it, maintaining it in a perpetual present. This reference also surfaces in the materials and processes—which evoke the chemical reactions inherent to analog photographic development—and in the very dimensions of the work. The 8 × 10 inch format, long dominant in photography and closely associated with the large-format camera, inscribes the piece within the technical and conceptual history of the medium. To this exploration of photography’s depths is added a play of surface: reflections, iridescence, and subtle shifts in light engage the viewer’s gaze and invite a speculative experience in which perception and projection converge.
