Phenomenon 4
The fourth edition of Phenomenon included a public program between 27 June and 4 July 2022 and an exhibition that opened on 2 July and ran until 10 July 2022.
Taking as a starting point the island’s life and the way it has been reshaped over the years—from its yearlong agricultural cycle until the 1980s, to currently accommodating a seasonal tourist period followed by a winter migration to the mainland—Phenomenon 4 explored the notion of time and the construction of temporalities and their effects on our daily lives. Time is not the same for all. In times of radical socio-political shifts and after a long period of stagnation, the linear conception of time needs to be questioned. By establishing another way of relating that foregrounds a shared experience of collaboration and coexistence, Phenomenon 4 invited us to reassess our relationship with time. In a remote place like Anafi, where time has a different pace, we were asked to reconsider our normative rhythms, to think and act differently.

φαινόμενα
φαινόμενα was a one-week program of contemporary art that took place on the Aegean island of Anafi, Greece, between 5–12 July, 2021, in collaboration with the invited art spaces 3 137, EIGHT, Enterprise Projects, The Island Club and State of Concept Athens, from Greece and Cyprus. It reflected and responded to a period where space, social interactions, travel, and scale, had been warped and revealed as constructs of institutional powers. φαινόμενα hoped to explore these times as an opportunity to rethink space, in particular public space, not as an external container, but as something that both gets created by and shapes bodies in a continuous, political struggle.

Phenomenon 3
The third edition of Phenomenon took place on 1–14 July, 2019. The project investigated the role of art in times of political urgency. By questioning singular points of view and naturalized concepts, art offers new ways of imagining a collective life, producing forms of social engagement, counteracting authoritarian and populist ideologies. Phenomenon looked for strategies through art that enable encounters of differential forces and interests, circumvent constructed binary oppositions and realize the creative and political potential of the unstable in-between.

Phenomenon 2
The second edition of Phenomenon took place on 3–16 July, 2017. Phenomenon 2 looked at how histories, collective and personal, are socially constructed and constantly renegotiated. Anafi, at its small but telling scale, is a prime example of cultural stratification, where the Apollo temple quietly serves as the foundation of an orthodox monastery, while the history of the exiles that were held in Anafi has silently cohabited with the island’s local history. What are the forces at play that actualize the visible and the discursive and construct historical formations? How can history be retold and the master narrative denaturalized? The project investigated the circulation of images through space and time and argued for a multiplicity of partial and irreducible archaeologies that create new connections and open up the world to new kinds of imaginaries.

Phenomenon 1
The first edition of Phenomenon took place on 6–19 July, 2015. A phenomenon is something that is made appear or brought to light, but that can, as easily, fall back into obscurity or oblivion. On this remote island, suddenly brought out of the darkness by Apollo to provide shelter to the Argonauts, the project explored contemporary art as a lens that reveals the invisible, blurs the apparent, gives access to unimaginable worlds. Confronted with its limits, through the sensorial shock of the bright white light and the infinite sea, the mind was summoned to experiment, trace multiple cartographies, displace its perspective and (re)create memories. Acting from the outskirts of the outskirts, art can propose new experiences and produce knowledge. In offering alternative ways of seeing and investigating the possibilities of the infinitesimal space between visible and discursive, the project looked to overcome established hierarchies, generate unexpected connections and be a force for change.
