FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
- When can I apply? And when will the decision be announced?
The first submission period for applications is from September 1 to September 30, 2025. All applicants will be notified by the end of November 2025.
- What are the amount, and can the grant amount exceed the stated range?
The grants are 5,000 or 10,000 euros, depending on project needs. It is not possible to ask for a different amount.
- What is the application process?
a) Complete the application form available on the website. We recommend preparing the application on a separate document and copy/paste on the form.
b) Review your application and ensure all required information is included before submission.
c) You will receive an email confirming successful submission. If you do not receive an email, check your spam folder.
d) No changes can be made after the submission deadline.
e) Applications that are incomplete at the time of submission will not be reviewed.
- Can I submit an application before the deadline and make changes later?
No. The application must be submitted in full by the deadline. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
- When can the proposed project take place?
Projects can start any time after 01/01/2026 or can be ongoing, and need to be completed before 31/12/2027.
- Can I apply for an exhibition project at a commercial gallery?
No. Projects to be shown at commercial galleries will not qualify for the grant.
- I am an artist. Can I apply for an exhibition project at a non-for-profit space?
Yes, the project may qualify but the application will need to be submitted by the non-for-profit space that is organizing the exhibition.
- We are a collective but we do not have a legal entity. Can we apply?
Yes. You have two options: one of you can apply as an “individual” and redistribute the grant between you. Please note that this works only for research projects. Or if you wish to apply for visual arts projects or socially-engaged art-based activities, the application will need to be submitted by the non-for-profit space (legal entity) that is hosting the project.
- Can members of the same collective apply for different projects?
Yes, but the same individual or legal entity cannot be the main applicant for more than one proposal. Only one project can be submitted under the collective’s name by a member acting on its behalf. Different members of the same collective may each submit their own distinct projects, as long as these are not submitted under the collective’s name. Projects may share some members, but each must have distinct leadership and contributors.
- May I submit more than one application?
Each applicant (individual or organization) may submit only one application per cycle.
- My submission does not involve a link with the global majority. Will it be disqualified?
No. Forging connections with the global majority, promoting networks of translocal solidarity and interconnected struggles will simply be considered as an additional positive factor in the evaluation.
- If my project has other funding, will it affect my application?
No, but all existing funding sources should be disclosed in the application.
- Can a project taking place outside of Greece be funded?
Projects must be based in Greece and actively engage with the local context. However, applicants do not necessarily need to have Greek nationality or residency.
- Are grants awarded for residency programs?
No. The grant program does not fund residency programs as standalone initiatives.
- Can I apply through a newly founded organization with little or no prior activity?
Yes. Newly founded organizations are eligible to apply, as long as their legal and tax registration and bank account are completed before submission. The absence of a track record will not disqualify the application.
- I run an artist-run space or a non-for-profit organization. Can I apply for funding of the program of my organization next year, which will include more than just one project?
Yes. The grant can fund the overall programming activity of an organization, but is not awarded for operational costs. This is to protect your autonomy and independence.
- If I apply through an organization, does the project need to be presented within it?
Yes. If the main applicant is an organization, the proposed project must be presented within the framework of that organization (for example, in its space or through its program).
- Are documentary or film productions eligible?
Documentary or film productions are eligible only if they align with the program’s mission and are part of a broader artistic or art research project.
- Is it necessary to submit bank account details with the application?
No, but applicants must have a bank account in a Greek bank before applying. The bank account details will be requested after the grant is approved and before payment. Projects with no Greek bank account will not be awarded the grant.
- When is the grant disbursed?
Funds should be disbursed as soon as practicable, upon completion of all formalities and the signing of the grant agreement.
- Are taxes included in the grant amount?
The grant is provided as a net amount; all applicable taxes are the responsibility of the grantee.
- How may the grant be used?
The funds must be used exclusively for the proposed project and in line with the details and the budget submitted in the application.
- Will unsuccessful applicants receive feedback?
Due to the high volume of applications, we are unable to provide individual feedback. However, those who do not receive the grant will be notified by email by the end of November 2025.
- Can I reapply in a future grant cycle if unsuccessful?
Yes, but applicants should carefully review their proposal and eligibility criteria before reapplying.
- Can I inquire about my application status?
We are unable to provide updates on application status during the review process. Applicants will be notified after selection.
- Does the Phenomenon require acknowledgment in project materials?
Yes. All funded projects must include Phenomenon’s logo and pre-approved wording in communications, invitations, and promotional materials. Failure to comply may result in funding being revoked.
- What is a conflict of interest?
A conflict of interest occurs when an individual’s personal, professional, or financial relationships could compromise, or appear to compromise, their ability to make objective and unbiased decisions. In the context of this grant program, a conflict of interest may arise if an applicant has a prior or ongoing relationship with any member of the selection committee that could influence or be perceived to influence the evaluation of their application by the decision-makers in the selection committee member concerned.
- Why do I need to disclose conflicts of interest?
Transparency is key to ensuring a fair and unbiased selection process, based on artistic and social significance, rather than on connections and nepotism. The Phenomenon Association genuinely welcomes and values any disclosures as acts of integrity and fairness. You can rest assured that disclosing conflicts of interest does not automatically disqualify your application at all, but it allows the committee to assess the situation and potentially implement measures to prevent any undue influence. Your disclosure will be reviewed as part of the application process. Depending on the nature of the conflict, the selection process may include measures such as recusing the relevant committee member from evaluating your application to ensure fairness. It is only in the very unlikely event of severe conflicts that an application may be rejected on this basis.
- What happens if I omit to disclose an actual, potential or perceived conflict of interest?
Failure to disclose a known conflict of interest may result in disqualification or revocation of the grant.
- What are examples of conflicts of interest that I need to disclose in the grant application?
Conflicts of interest can take various forms and it will be impossible to list them all. Below are some examples that are relevant to the grant program:
- Prior Collaborations: If you or your organization have worked directly with a selection committee member on exhibitions, curatorial projects, publications, or other professional art initiatives.
- Advisory Roles: If you or a selection committee member have served as advisors to the same institution, collective, or funding body.
- Financial Transactions: If there have been past or ongoing financial relationships between the applicant and a selection committee member, such as payments for services, exchanges of artworks (whether as a sale, gift, or acquisition), or any other financial or material exchanges.
- Previous Funding: If you or your organization have received funding from a selection committee member or have granted them funding in the past.
- Personal Relationships: If there are close personal relationships, such as friendships, romantic relationships, or family ties, or even antagonistic relationships (e.g., conflicts or feuds) that could be perceived as influencing the selection process.
- Other Forms of Value Transfer: Any other exchanges, whether financial or material, that could create a real or perceived bias should be disclosed (e.g., an artist applying for the grant previously provided studio space to a selection committee member at a discounted rate).
