Uncanny Landscapes (this bed remembers more than I do) forms part of Chan’s ongoing Parquet series (2021–present), which uses the recurring motif of parquet flooring to explore the poetics of domesticity, intimacy, and memory. The series considers how thresholds are experienced not only as architectural boundaries but also as emotional conditions, attending to the surfaces of private spaces as repositories of touch, movement, and lived experience. In doing so, parquet becomes more than a material motif; it acts as a witness to the quiet intimacies and everyday rituals that unfold upon it.

Drawing upon parquet flooring as a familiar feature of late twentieth-century domestic interiors across much of Asia, Uncanny Landscapes considers how everyday architectural surfaces become silent custodians of lived experience. Through its proximity to the bed, the floor bears witness to gestures of rest, desire, care, and absence, accumulating traces that exceed conscious recollection. Rather than treating memory as something held solely within the body, the work proposes that it is distributed across the material world, lingering in the surfaces that quietly structure our everyday lives.
