Elsa Werth’s [Point de Fuite, Vanishing Poing] brings a conceptual dimension to the tools shared by cinema and drawing, in their rendering of the experience of space. [Werth’s work] has a parasitic presence, recalling both the three-dimensional space in which the viewer lives and the artifice of depth in cinema, evoking the laws of perspective in drawing. The exhibited version of this work consists of 4 or more marks made with a stamp on one or more of the exhibition walls. The stamp inscribes an X (a point) and just below it VANISHING POINT (the direction of the point) on the surface of the wall. This refers to the vanishing points used to construct the representation of a three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface: to create perspective, to give the illusion of depth. In our system of representation, it’s possible to create perspectives with 1, 2 or 3 vanishing points, but beyond that, the image loses its anchorage to reality, tending towards abstraction.
